Today I started my second semester of IDT (Instructional Design and Technology) at Memphis University. My instructor encouraged each student to define key terms in our words. I though a blog post would be a great place to record what I THINK these terms mean. It will be interesting to see how my definitions change or expand as I learn more about Instructional Design.

IDT Terms
Consider how you define the following terms in your own words. Although you will not be submitting this information at this time, you should document your ideas so that you can access them later in the module. Feel free to document your ideas in a way that is comfortable for you: paper and pencil, word processing, concept map, audio/video, etc.
Your notes will also be useful when you are working on the Visual Definition of the Field project later in the course.
Technology - is a broad term that describes many types of tools. We especially think of electronic devices that "improve" our lives as technology. The term is applied pretty loosely. An item that was once labeled technology can, as technology advances, fall out of our definition of technology. The term technology has an unspoken leaning toward NEW technology. Think of the refrigerator. It is electronic, it improves our lives but because we are so accustomed to it, very few people would describe it as technology.
Education - is purposefully and systematically instructing learners about one or many topics.
Learning - is when someone acquires and retains new information.
Instruction - is a generic term for any planned material or event that is used in education to improve the probability of learning.
Teaching - is facilitating the delivery of instruction.
Design -is intentionally creating a product that meets the needs of the users.
Instructional Design - is intentionally creating materials that effectively facilitates learning.
Instructional Technology - is hardware and software that is used specifically to improve the probability of learning.
Educational Technology - is hardware and software that may provide learning opportunities but the learning that is accomplished will be largely driven by the user.
